Then it dabbles into the extras your manual doesn’t tell you, using other bits and pieces you have been given with it; trying out stitches you have been afraid to use; so that you come away saying – gosh I didn’t know I would be able to do that and now I can.  Great class, lots of fun – do you know the manufacturers make at least 27 different types of sewing machine needles – which one should you choose? and many other bits of info to make you a better sewist!

New ‘Make a Quilt in a Day’ date set

So many of you are keen on my

‘Make a Quilt in a Day’

class, that I have decided to run another in June!

The date: 10th September 2016.  From 9.30 – 4 pm

at The Old School, Storrington  RH20 4LL.

What are you going to make? – well the choice is super and fun!  You will need to decide on whether you want to use a charm pack (40 x 5 inch squares from a range of fabrics), which usually calls for extra fabric or a Jelly Roll (40 x 2 1/2 inch strips by width of fabric from a fabric range).  The Jelly Roll is the easier to make but perhaps the Charm Square is the more fun.

The Charm Pack is an easy peasy quilt that everyone should be able to complete in a day.  I have just finished the top if I can get my camera to work – (having come back from Italy with lots of photos, it decided it needed a break or something!) Phone comes to the rescue!  Here it is and it is only Thursday – not finished but the core and shape is – just waiting for the border and the sandwich.  I’ve called it Autumn Charm having used really sweet autumnal fabrics called Turning Leaves by Moda.  There are stags and bears, and lots of leaves of course.  Quite a manly quilt, I think, this one. You could use any fabrics – floral, baby, modern, traditional and so on.

Autumn Charm Quilt (2)

In the meantime below is the photo of the last charm pack quilt they made at the Make a Quilt in a Day class in September 2015.  It really is cute, but no one finished in a day, so that is why I am coming up with another pattern for you.finished boxes quilt

I have also made a quick, charm quilt that I just love – quick for me, but not for the beginners I’m afraid .  The fabric is called Little Black Dress I by Basic Grey for Moda.  The pattern is sweet and ever so easy to do – just takes a bit of time. I am happy to point you in the direction of how to make this quilt – after the class of course!

ziooer quilt

On the other hand if you wish to make a Jelly Roll quilt – here is one that we really love and you can definitely make it in a day.  So if that is the one you want pop out to your nearest quilt shop or go on line and buy yourself a Jelly Roll.

jelly roll quilt

Local shops to me who sell Jelly Rolls or Charm Packs are:

Chalk Hill Blue, South Farm Road, Worthing.

Eclectic Maker, West Worthing Station, West Worthing.

More Sewing, Tarring Road, Worthing.

And on-line – Cotton Patch in Birmingham.  Lady Sew and Sew in Marlow/Henley. And many others  – just type jelly roll or charm squares in Google.

Jelly Roll quilt!

If you are making the Jelly Roll quilt – then for the quilt itself,  you need at least 40 strips and no extra fabric, unless you want a border and a binding.  You do need wadding and backing to make the quilt, and think you might get to that stage on the day- it all depends how fast/accurate you sew!!!  If you want a border then the quilt will finish at 58” x 72” quilt or so

1 full (42 strips) jelly roll, scissors; 60 cm for 4.5” border, optional(pick one of the fabrics from you roll and use that for the border and another for the binding.

50 cm for binding

Wadding for quilt 60”x 74 – get a pack that has a minimum of those dimensions.

2 metres backing for quilt      – Ikea has some good light weight fabrics that are 60” wide – super for this quilt.  I also bought 2 fat quarters to make my irregular circles on top for quilting.

Charm pack quilt:

If you want to make the Charm Square quilt –  Then to make your quilt you need 45 five inch charm squares- 3 more than are usually in a normal charm pack which have 40-42 – so either acquire a small bit of that fabric range for the extra squares you need OR from your stash that still has the feel and colours of your charm pack. You will also need to go with the fabrics an extra fabric neutral colour of 3/4 yard– now I bought a quiet beige fabric with quiet dots on it – to give some movement to the quilt. You could buy a solid or we call these fabrics ‘blenders’ which work with the fabric.
The quilt finishes about 40” square – if you want to add a  4” border you will need .60 metre. Binding slightly less – .50  to make 180” strips.
So it is up to you which you do. Wadding needs include – 52” square if you’ve added a border. (Wadding varies when it comes time to quilt the wadding. Some require quilt every 4” and others go as far as 10”. I would recommend that you buy a cotton/polyester wadding – with a quilting distance of 8” or so. Heirloom, Warm and Super Soft all do that. The store should give you a sheet about the wadding when you buy it. If they don’t, ask them about the quilting distance.

Costs?  £45 for the day with a short break for lunch – bring a sandwich or have a walkabout Storrington for a sandwich. You need a sewing machine and know how to use it.  I also suggest you buy yourself a 1/4″ foot for your sewing machine – generic for current Singers, Janomes and Brothers is fine.  Otherwise, probably buy for your own sewing machine.  Cost – £5-£12.

New class schedule for the Autumn!

So there is lots happening in the Autumn and I hope you have checked with my class schedule.

What a summer – now that I am back into September I can catch my breath!

First off – I have some major interest in the Tuesday, October 14th class – but would really like more bookings.  It’s a Beginner Patchwork and Quilting class which meets alternate Tuesday afternoons with a break over Christmas and finally finishing on February 3rd 2015!  So if you want to join up, just drop me an email to let me know.

Also, my Saturday class will not run unless I get 3 more people!  Pity since in the past, the Saturday class has always been popular.  Everyone is too busy I suppose.

As well someone mentioned the possibility of an evening class.  I am happy to run one – but I need more people to show interest!  Unfortunately, I don’t have the room at home to run  a class – so need to have enough people to hire a hall.  I will keep you posted if you will do your turn and let me know if you are interested!

Suggest you check out this wonderful crazy quilt I saw today on the International Study Centre email.  http://www.quiltstudy.org/collections/quilt_of_the_month/current.html

My Beyond Beginner Class is filling up nicely.  It is a second level Beginner Class which starts on the 15th September meeting alternate Mondays.  One of the blocks we make is a foundation pieced crazy block – the gals all enjoy it.

I must start my new quilt I finally have the fabrics for:  Be Colourful by Jacqueline de Jonge.  This is being offered by The Quilt Show, which I follow regularly.  If you haven’t looked in on it, you should – full of lots of wonderful information.  They are having a special offer now for $15 or so to get to December membership.  That is about a third of the normal cost for a third of a year.  – dip your toe in and enjoy – $15 is £10 or so – a bargain for what you get, that’s for sure.

Enjoy
